2020.10.29 15:01 eZGjBw1Z What's New on OHLQ - Thursday 10/29/20

Here are some of the interesting products that appeared in the 3:32 AM update of ohlq.com on 10/29/2020. These would be from deliveries that happened before today so they might already be gone if they were put out on shelves yesterday.
There have already been some changes to products in the system leading up to the first of the month and supposedly there will be many more changes. Many products appear to have been removed but I need to check my data. I'll try to make a post summarizing the changes over the last few days by tomorrow.
I'm utilizing an experimental technique to 'guess' where some hidden products may have shown up. The same ~1 day delay after delivery would apply and many of these products are likely to sell out fast. These guesses will be hidden like spoilers until you click on them like this: Spoiler.

2020.10.29 07:27 1983_qt A timeline of American political collapse and rot, beginning in 1963

I think American political collapse truly begins in 1963, following the Civil Rights movement
September 1963 - 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, four black children killed during church by dynamite perpetrated by the local Ku Klux Klan chapter in Birmingham, Alabama
November 1963 - Assassination of President Kennedy
February 1965 - Assassination of Malcolm X
April 1968 - Assassination of Martin Luther King
June 1968 - Assassination of Bobby Kennedy
August 1968 - Hubert Humphrey receives the Democratic nomination for President, despite 80% of primary voters voting for anti-Vietnam war candidates. This decision would incite riots outside the Convention and solidify Nixon’s victory later that year.
December 1969 - Murder of Fred Hampton, Black Panther Party leader and activist killed by Chicago police and the FBI in a no-knock raid of his apartment
May 1970 - Kent State Massacre, four unarmed anti-war protestors killed by Ohio National Guard
June 1972 - 1974: Watergate Scandal, Nixon Administration caught wiretapping the Democratic National Headquarters heading into 1972 General Election, and failed to cover it up. 69 officials convicted
Autumn 1974 - Nixon resigns from fear of impeachment but is immediately pardoned by President Ford, closing all further Watergate investigations
1969 - 1974: President Nixon continues the bloody and unpopular Vietnam War, and even expanded the bombings into Laos and Cambodia. 58,000 Americans killed in total. Nixon Administration also responsible for helping to orchestrate 1973 Chilean coup, allowing Augusto Pinochet's rise to power as a neo-fascist dictator in South America
November 1979 - Greensboro Massacre, four members of the Communist Workers Party and one protestor killed by the Ku Klux Klan and American Nazi Party during a protest march in Greensboro, North Carolina
November 1980 - Actor Ronald Reagan wins the Presidency, championing religious conservatism, free-market policies, and aggressive militaristic stance against Soviet Union
August 1981 - Tax Act of 1981, major legislation championed by Reagan that saw massive deregulation and extreme tax cuts, especially federal income tax rates. The Reagan era is really when corporatism and big business dominate American life and politics.
August 1981 - Air traffic controller union goes on strike, which was met with fierce aggression from Reagan Administration, 11,000 employees fired and sets a precedent of anti-union sentiment
1981 - 1987: Reagan and his Administration completely ignore AIDS epidemic sweeping America for years, probably in part due to his extreme homophobic and Christian beliefs. Only in 1987 was Reagan pressured into establishing a commission on HIV, but by then 47,000 Americans had been infected.
September 1986 - President Reagan vetoes a bill that would have imposed sanctions on Apartheid South Africa, defending the apartheid system and painting the African National Congress as communist and dangerous. His veto would later rightfully be overruled by Congress.
1985 - 1987: Iran-Contra Affair, Reagan Administration sold arms to Iran in order to fund the Contras in Nicaragua, illegally bypassing Congress legislation and committing high treason
1990 - 1991: Gulf War, thousands of American soldiers sent by President H.W. Bush to defend American energy corporations and a Kuwaiti dictator
1992 - 1994: NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) signed into law by President H.W. Bush, accelerating deindustrialization and outsourcing jobs to poorer nations with cheap labor standards, slowly but surely hollowing out and bankrupting the American middle class, working class, and ruining most of the Midwestern economy
Spring 1993: Waco Siege; military, federal, and Texas state law enforcement in a standoff with the Branch Davidians, a religious cult. FBI was seeking arrest warrants but after 51 days of the cult refusing to leave the compound, US officials botched attempts at a successful siege and 76 Davidians were trapped in the compound and were burnt alive.
September 1994: 1994 Crime Bill passes and championed by Joseph Biden in the Senate, expanding extreme prison sentences for Black Americans for minor drug offenses. The 80’s and 90’s was really when the War on Drugs was in full force and both parties can be seen as unitary in lawmaking regarding crime.
April 1995 - Oklahoma City Bombing, Timothy McVeigh bombs a federal building in Oklahoma, killing 168 and injuring 600. In response to this, Congress tightened rules regarding habeas corpus and established several new federal crimes punishable by death, especially crimes of terrorism
November 1999 - Repeal of Glass-Steagall Act by President Clinton, this act separated investment banking from retail banking, but when repealed retail and investment banks were once allowed to resume predatory and corrupt business practices. This decision by Clinton also helped the American economy fall into recession by 2008.
Winter 2000 - George Bush wins the Presidency, despite losing the popular vote. Vote recounting in Florida was struck down by the Supreme Court, essentially handing the election loser the presidency
Autumn 2001 - September 11 attacks ensue, followed by the declaration of the War on Terror and passage of the Patriot Act in October, legalizing mass surveillance and data collection in the name of national security
January 2002 - Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp opens in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, established by the Bush Administration to detain and interrogate terrorists involved in the 9/11 Attacks. Extreme violation of human rights as well as indefinite detention without trial and torture were committed against prisoners here and despite promises of the Obama Administration to close the military facility, it remains operational to this day
Spring 2003 - Disastrous Invasion of Iraq, attempts of Bush Administration to establish geopolitical and economic dominance in the Middle East despite Iraq having no connection to the September 11 attacks. 180,000 Iraqi civilians are reported to have been killed since 2016
2003 - 2004: Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal, prison in then occupied-Iraq operated by American defense forces. The CIA and U.S. Army are cited to have used physical and sexual abuse, torture, rape, sodomy, murder, and other human rights abuses against Iraqi political prisoners. Only 17 officers were removed from duty when photos from the prison were released to the public
August 2005 - Hurricane Katrina, complete failure of Bush Administration to administer relief to the entire New Orleans region, 1,800 fatalities total
October 2008 - Bank bailout act passed by President Bush, rewarding and bailing out the same corporations with billions of dollars, despite these banks’ practices and corruption responsible for the 2008 financial crisis
2009 - 2010: Citizens United v. FEC, Supreme Court decision regarding campaign finance, ruling donations from corporations or associations to politicians as free speech. This decision essentially legalized special interests and bribery in government.
2011 - 2012: Occupy movement and Occupy Wall Street protest met with fierce law enforcement retaliation and mass arrests. This movement to address economic inequality was met with zero political support, and none from the Obama Administration
Spring 2016 - 2016 Democratic primaries, Hillary is nominated despite leaked information revealing the DNC was actively trying to suppress the progressive candidate, Bernard Sanders
November 2016 - Trump wins the Presidency, this one kind of explains itself, rise of fascist rhetoric and talking points, cult of personality built around Trump himself
August 2017 - Charlottesville Car Attack, terror attack by James Fields Jr. who drove his car into crowd of protestors marching against the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. President Trump would infamously defend both sides in this event, emboldening the white supremacist movement
Spring 2020 - 2020 Democratic primaries, Biden is nominated despite foul play suspected. Foul play also suspected in Iowa Caucus, Buttigieg wins more delegates despite receiving less votes than Sanders. All centrist candidates dropped out days before Super Tuesday to solidify a centrist nomination, Joe Biden, while Warren did not drop out until after, taking votes away from Bernie in critical primary states
2020 - Complete failure of Trump Administration to contain Coronavirus, continues to this day with 225,000 dead, mass unemployment, and suspected political corruption and criminal intent with mail-in ballot rhetoric.
2020 - Nationwide protests of police brutality and corruption sweep nation, mostly met with fierce retaliation and escalation by police and National Guard. Kicked off by the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the Republican Party painted this movement as some Marxist plot coming to destroy America's cities while Establishment Democrats and Progressives argue on the issue of police funding, corruption, and accountability.
More to come soon, thanks!

Analysis: Does Robin charge you too much for house upgrades and how I concluded she is a diety.
Ever since a Let’s Play got me into Stardew Valley, I’ve fallen in love with the world. It’s something special, a place to relax and get away from the world’s problems. Here, you can pay bills with the sweat of your own brow, make friends, fall in love, and can escape the drudgery of modern life. It’s magical in its own way.
I’ve played hundreds of hours over multiple save files. I’ve been wondering one thing just recently, however. I remember when I first asked Robin for house upgrades and the sheer bowel-emptying amount she asked for. Seriously? That much for a kitchen? Now that I haven’t left my house for the past several weeks, fear human contact, and have deep dived into the paranormal, I’m overthinking something constantly: with regards to modern housework, does Robin the carpenter over or under charge you for her work?
To figure this out, it’s going to require a fair bit of math and a lot of guesswork. I’m going to have to establish a lot of ground rules but I’m going to try and be as accurate to real world costs as I can. We need to learn four things:
  • What year does the game take place so we can calculate accurate inflation?
  • What is the square footage of the house and its upgrades?
  • What is the exchange value of gold, the game’s currency?
  • What is the cost of Robin’s labor?
Let’s tackle the first. To do this, I scoured around to look for modern conveniences. Primarily, I found these five:
  • Leah mentions she has a laptop
  • The carpentry shop sells Plasma screen TVs.
  • There is what appears to be an old Apple computer monitor in Harvey’s clinic and Maru’s room.
  • Sam has an electric guitar and what looks like a plasma screen computer monitor in his room.
  • In Mr. Qi’s casino, the slot machines do not have a lever. This is important because that gives us a firm earliest date of 1963.
Another interesting factoid is the number of Cathode-ray TVs you see in Stardew Valley. These are the precursors to plasma screens, which were in turn succeeded by LCD screen TVs. Additionally, a large number of your starter houses comes preequipped with Cathode-ray TVs. Granted, this may be because the farmhouse was abandoned for many years before you came along, but there exists another such TV in 1 River Road where we often see George watching his shows. I will concede that George and Evelyn are quite old and may not have the tech savvy nature of Sebastian to get something more modern, so that can’t be an accurate measurement. Plus, Alex’s mental acumen is a little... questionable.
As for crafting recipes, there really isn’t anything worth talking about. Magic items I won’t talk about because it has no real world comparison; that also throws out the wizard shop’s items. The furniture catalog has nothing of note to pinepoint a date, and nor does Pierre’s General Store, Joja Mart, Joja Warehouse, the Blacksmith, Stardrop Saloon, or Marnie’s ranch. Leah doesn’t mention anything about her laptop, so that is of little help.
So the casino gives us a low bound. Although manufacturing of the plasma screen TV stopped in the US in 2014, plasma screen TVs were losing their market shares around 2007 and factories were shutting down. As you can buy them like hotcakes and fill a shed with them, 2007 is our upper bound.
The price for plasma screens was quite pricey for residential homes. 1995 was the year 42 inch plasma screens became commercial, and some had home installation priced somewhere around US$15,000. Still not quite the size of the queen or king sized bed you and your spouse have (the size of the plasma screen in the game), but sixty inch plasma screen TVs were sold around the year 2000, and that is plenty big. Given the size of the screen in the game is roughly three tiles just like your bed, I think it’s safe to say this is around the size of our estimate. Our rough year range is now 1995 to 2007. Let’s split the difference and say the game takes place in 2001.
We have our year.
To calculate the size of our farmhouse, we need some baseline measurement. Luckily, the game is pixelated so we can be quite accurate in our measurements. Unluckily, we have no confirmed height of anything, so we have to intuit some things. Reddit user asparagus made this excellent size chart, so while I can just use that and save myself a lot of work, let us do some measurements of our own and then measure the farmhouse with both this method and asparagus’ method.
First, there is the height of plants, but those can vary widely. For instance, you can pot prickly pear cactuses in your farmhouse, but their height can vary anywhere between one and seven feet. Plant height is a no go. The average height of a minifridge is forty three inches (109 cm) tall, so unless you are a dwarf, that’s not right either. The fences are also a good starting point, as most agricultural fencing stands at four feet (1.2 m).
Here we don’t have to do much; all fences are forty eight pixels in height. Four feet equals out to forty eight inches (121.92 cm). It doesn’t get more perfect than that!
Trigger warning: incoming math.
Now comes the really tricky part: getting the dimensions of each iteration of your farmhouse, and squinting at my computer screen like a mole in order to count pixels; we must include walls as well as that is included in square footage. Our first iteration has pixel measurements of 704x496. Add in the doorway (136x64pixels), and then we’ll still convert for square feet. 704 * 496 + (136 * 64) = 318,452 pixels/sq, which (dividing by 12^2) converts to 2,211.47 ft/sq. Damn, we’re well on our way for most modern mansions.
I have to have messed something up (205.45 m/sq, btw). The average firebox (the inside of a fireplace where you burn wood) tends to be around 32x20 inches (81.28x50.8 cm). Ours is... 72x40. Twice as large. I also haven’t even begun to calculate the farmhouse’s height because Robin is beginning to scare me.
Alright, new plan, we’re going with asparagus. I married Haley and took her measurements. She is 104 pixels tall, and since she is 65 inches (165.1 cm) according to asparagus, that gives us a measurement of .625 inches/pixel (1.5875 cm/pixel).
Side note, I really want some Twizlers right now.
So instead of having pixels as at a 1:1 ratio, we have something a little more lenient, but things are looking a little... grim. We’ll have to convert each individual amount, so we have (704 * .625) * (496 * .625) + ((136 * 64) * .625^2) for 124,395.31 inches/sq, 863.86 ft/sq., 80.25 m/sq. But still, we haven’t even begun to calculate the actual volume of our farmhouse yet, so these numbers are going to explode.
I’m beginning to think Robin is Hestia. Yoba is not the only deity in this town.
Alright, calculating the rest of the floor spaces is a little boring so let’s speedrun this.
Wall height for the farmhouse is 140 pixels, so (140 * .625) * 124,395.31 inches/sq / 12^3 = 6,298.95 ft^3 (178.36 m^3) for the farmhouse, and 25,800.51 ft^3 (730.58 m^3) using my method.
Just... let’s move on.
Second iteration has me doing a fair bit more work.
Wall height is 135 pixels, and rightmost—wait, the walls are shorter? Weird. Anyway, the rightmost room has dimensions of 486 for width by 375 for depth (and the same cubby dimensions), giving us cuboid dimensions of 24,603,750 pixels^3, which converts to 14,238.28 ft^3 (403.18 m^3), and 3,476.14 ft^3 (82.83 m^3) using asparagus' method
Middle corridor has a dimensional width of 42 pixels by 87 depth, giving us a total of 285.47 ft^3 (8.08 m^3), and 69.69 ft^3 (1.97 m^3) using asparagus' method.
Leftmost room (the kitchen) has a width of 870 and depth of 375, with a doorway of 136x64. That gives us a cuboid area of 314,019.38 ft^3 (29,173.11 m^3), and 6,388.74 ft^3 (180.91 m^3) using asparagus' method.
That gives us a grand total for a tier two home of...
... 328,543.13 ft^3 (29,584.37 m^3) using my method and
... 9,934.58 ft^3 (281.31 m^3) using asparagus' method.
So Robin added at a minimum 3,635.63 cubic feet to your house in three days by herself. Even if you extend the days and months to roughly align with our own calendar, that would be a mere nine days. How much powdered starfruit did she snort in order to do that by herself? I 100% believe Emily is the town’s dealer. I didn’t even calculate the length of the farmhouse loft. It’s doable, and even though you can’t enter it in the game, a bigger farmhouse means a bigger loft judging by the look of it.
Anyway, I’m not going to calculate the loft area right now. I’m not going to calculate the other tiers of your farmhouse either, even though that was my intent when I started this analysis. The math is easy enough, but it gets boring to type, and no doubt to read. Plus, I’m a little stunned by Robin's carpentry acumen. C’mon Robin, stop upgrading my house. Exercise with the girls, dance with your husband, smoke some weed, I dunno, RELAX.
But in a strange way, it makes a weird sort of sense. Pretty much no one plays the game with auto-run turned off, but do so for a moment. See how fast you move. That is your normal pace, and auto-run is you, an Olympian god, sprinting around town every second of every day, helping the shit out of everyone whether they want it or not, snorting the same starfruit mixture you got from Robin to keep going, who may have gotten it from Linus (my money is still on Emily). We’ve become so accustomed to seeing the run animation as our default I almost didn’t realize it doesn’t translate to modern life. The boards in your house, I almost took those as your normal 2x4 planks of wood (which actually measure 1.5x3.5, the world lies to me). They are not. They are almost the width of your entire body, and your walking pace (sorry I can’t get an exact pixel measurement) covers roughly one and a half boards, a similar length to a normal human gait. The art style fooled even me until now, but your house is massive.
Let’s just answer our other two questions. What is the exchange rate? Calculating the exchange rate of a fictional world is always tricky as they have different concepts of rarities, but I’ll give it the ol’ college try. Once again, I can’t do anything with magic. Let’s first list some things of note:
  • Iridium is fairly easy to get around Stardew Valley once you are able, and that is a rare and valuable metal, with a current price of US$1,510 per troy ounce.
  • You can purchase a golden column to place on your farm, and gold has a current price of US$1,643 per troy ounce
  • Conversely, while the first two are rare and valuable metals, crops such as corn are valued at prices like 150g, a very unusually high amount if exchanged 1:1 to USA dollars.
  • Going back to plasma screen TVs, we can use its price history and then convert currencies to Stardew Valley gold.
Now you may be tempted to say we can’t translate iridium and gold’s prices to real world market values, and normally you may be right, but there are some extenuating circumstances in the game: the town is right next to two very large mines. It is even a plot point once you clear the glittering boulder that the water carries ore from deep inside the mountain. Yes, gold and iridium are valuable, but your location to ore veins is important; gold and iridium may be uncommon resources but you have access to very specific places where they are more common, otherwise known as the scarcity heuristic). This also explains two facts about iridium: discounting magic, iridium is quite rare in the game, just like real life. Secondly, Clint’s prices make a lot more sense not only because it’s endgame material, but because iridium is super dense and has a very high melting point, thus making it a very difficult material to work with.
But by far the biggest challenge of this question is figuring out whether or not items you produce factor in the cost of your labor or not. For instance, lace is made of simple materials that even in the days of Victorian England, it was easy to get. However because lace was so time consuming to make, it could command absurd prices. Thus, one of the first things we need to discover is whether or not the game takes into account cost of labor or not.
So I am going to take you all back to school and talk about someone who’s old and dead: Adam Smith. It was he who talked about the cost of labor in his book The Wealth of Nations, and because of that, I bring up this particular line:
“...From century to century, corn is a better measure than silver, because, from century to century, equal quantities of corn will command the same quantity of labour more nearly than equal quantities of silver.
Why did I mention corn above? This is why. Prices may vary, but agriculture has been around for thousands of years and the cost of a farmer’s labor equals about the same.
According to Dylan Baumann, Stardew Valley corn plants have a profit value of 535 gold per plant. Our corn plant profits are about as high as they can get without adding something new into the mix, and we don’t want that yet.
Let’s set some ground rules:
  • Cultivatable farm space on the standard farm equals out to 3,427 spaces, but we’ll round that down to 3,350 for iridium sprinklers, iridium watering can, and scarecrows, equaling maximum farming with no loss of crop.
  • We’ll keep Dylan’s ground rules, so no fertilizer.
  • No preserves, jams, wine, and juices.
  • No farming efficiencies and crop selling bonuses.
  • No use of the greenhouse to grow crops outside of the growing season.
If you plant the entire farm with corn and stop harvesting on Fall day 28 when the growing season ends, that lets you harvest a total of 11 ears of corn per plant. Multiply that by 3,350, we get a total of 36,850 ears of corn for your entire farm. Corn is measured in bushels, and a bushel of corn can be anywhere between 40 and 60 ears of corn, but we’ll say you really pack it in for 60, meaning your growing season for corn produces 36,850 / 60 corn for a total of 614.17 bushels per year.
The USDA has a 2001 labor value of corn at US$2.92 per acre (and that matches the Iowa labor statistic), and using 156 bushels per acre, that brings our labor cost per bushel at... US$00.02. That’s a real pittance. Considering bushels of corn retailed around $2.11 per bushel in 2001, that is an incredible markup of 184.85 times.
We’re almost done with the dreaded math, I swear.
Corn retails at 100g apiece in Stardew Valley(You get 50 gold from Pierre, so he has a 100% markup), meaning the labor cost should be around 184.85 times less that amount, meaning it takes about 0.54 gold to make one ear of corn.
Your average US farmers salary $55,000 and $100,000, and we’ll take the middle of $77,500 for our measurements. Dividing the farmer’s salary by the total ears of corn our farmer grows in Stardew Valley, we get a labor cost per ear of corn in US dollars of $2.10 per ear of corn. Now we multiply this by our markup ratio to get the IRL retail cost of corn in Stardew, getting US$237.08! Damn that better be some good eating! We divide that number by the Stardew Valley retail cost of corn, netting us a real world conversion of gold of, drumroll please, $2.37 US dollars per gold in 2001.
Now just for funzies, let us calculate the actual salary of your famer in Stardew Valley. Multiplying your 36,850 ears of corn by 50 gold (your selling price of gold, not the retail price of 100g), that nets you 1,842,500 gold per growing season. Multiply that by the dollagold conversion we just calculated and your real life gross income comes out to be US$436,672,500.
Give me all of the golden clocks, wizard.
Three questions down, one more to go. Currency conversion was rather tricky because it involved quite a lot of math, but this last question, what is the cost of Robin’s labor, that requires the most assumptions. There’s an easy answer and a hard answer.
Robin’s upgrades, except for the last, require you the farmer to give her resources in addition to gold. The simple answer is you are providing materials in order to keep the raw gold cost down. This means that the first house upgrade, 10,000 gold, is strictly her labor cost as the 450 wood is all the raw materials she needs to build. 3 days * 3 months (to adjust Stardew month lengths to our month lengths) comes out to Robin working an IRL equivalent to 9 days. Taking 10,000 gold / 9 days equals a cost of 1,111.111 gold per day, and considering Robin has snorted enough powdered starfruit to have 20 hour work days, that comes out to 55.56 gold per hour.
Just to be sure, let’s see if the math holds up for the last upgrade. That one requires a cost of 100,000 gold and comes preequipped with 33 casks. You do not provide the resources for the casks, meaning that comes included with the cost. Casks cannot be sold, but the materials required to make them are 20 wood and 1 hardwood, which Robin will provide for the same 100% markup (meaning 4 gold and 30 gold respectively). 4 gold * 30 gold * 33 casks comes out to 3,960 gold. Using the same calculations for the first house iteration, we get (100,000 gold - 3,960) / (3 days * 3 months) / 20 hours for a total of 533.56 gold per hour.
Not even close to our first estimate. We could just average them together for (533.56 + 55.56) / 2 = 294.56 gold, and that would be the easy answer. It would be nice to settle for the easy answer.
Let’s find the hard answer. We are going to calculate labor cost per square footage, and luckily most of the work has been done over the course of several google spreadsheets. To find the cost of materials and money per upgrade volume we get the formula (Upgrade volume - Base Volume) / 10,000 gold. This gives us a grand total of cubic material built per gold of...
...2,573.26 in^3/gold, 30.27 ft^3/gold, 2.89 m^3/gold using my method and
...628.24 in^3/gold, 0.36 ft^3/gold, 0.01 m^3/gold using asparagus’ method.
Let’s see if the math holds up for the basement upgrade and dammit I just realized I got to do more pixel measurements now. Hold on, be back in an hour.
Alright, I’m back. We don’t need to do any subtraction for the previous volume of the house considering the cellar is its own little area, but we still need to subtract the value of the materials used for the casks. The cellar comes out to a grand total of cubic materials built per gold of...
...386.91 in^3/gold, 0.22 ft^3/gold, 0.01 m^3/gold using my method and
...94.46 in^3/gold, 0.05 ft^3/gold, 0.0015 m^3/gold using asparagus’ method.
Huge discrepancy.
Before I get into my reasoning why, let us outline what we know first.
  • We’re pretty sure the game takes place in 2001.
  • We have the exact sizes of each house upgrade calculated with two different methods.
  • We have a certified exchange rate of US$2.37 at that point in time.
  • We have two different methods of calculating the cost of Robin’s labor.
  • The amount of work Robin does during her three(nine?) day job is absolutely obscene.
I come to one conclusion: Robin is a god that has settled down in the world of Stardew Valley.
Here me out. I have three pieces of evidence.
The first is when Robin is hired to take on a house upgrade job no one helps her, not even her husband Demetrius. Your house is right next to hers, so you’re not paying for travel. As we have shown by our calculations above and in the gDoc spreadsheet, that is a massive amount of work. It’s simply not possible for a human to accomplish such a monumental task. Robin claims she built her own home herself with this line from the game...
“Have I told you that I built our house from the ground up? It's definitely been the highlight of my career so far.”
...so we know her carpentry acumen is impressive enough for the job, but she has severely understated her skill. Homeadvisor pegs a house costing anywhere between US$150,000 to US$500,000 (US$102,005.53 to $340,018.44, adjusted for 2001 inflation), but even adjusted for inflation, Robin absolutely underbids the current housing market. Those inflation adjusted values, when converted to gold, come out to a range of 43,040.31g-143,467.70g. Granted, these prices are for a complete house, not adding onto a current house, but even if we half the value you are getting one hell of a discount.
The second piece is Robin’s language. The sheer passion for her work speaks wonders..
“Wood is a wonderful substance... it's versatile, cheap, strong, and each piece has its own unique character!”
...but perhaps she is just passionate about what she does. Many people are, but knowing what we do about how dirt cheap and blindingly fast she works let’s go into more detail about some things, specifically three lines. The first...
“Our little plan worked out well, don't you think? Pam and Penny seem really happy.”
...is said after Pam’s house undergoes an upgrade. “Our” plan? Sure, you are the one that buys the upgrade and Robin has to build it, but I can’t help but feel there is a double meaning behind this language. It is done out of the kindness of Robin’s heart and the materials have to come from somewhere, so she can’t do it for free, but it wasn’t about the money, as we have stated previously. It was about Penny.
Pam is a somewhat contentious person because of slobbish and slovenly nature. She is immediately and irrationally angered when Penny tries to pick the place up. She drinks heavily...
“\sigh*... My mother definitely has a problem with going to the saloon too much. But it's best not to dwell on bad things, right?”*
...doesn’t seem to understand not paying her tab has some consequences, and doesn’t realize what her habits have done to her daughter’s psyche.
Then you, the player come along. Pam is okay with the simple things in life, but you help Penny with her worries and insecurities, and then with you and Robin together, you give Penny everything she needs to help her shed those worries. She has a house that doesn have problems with rain, two friends who look out for her, her mom has a job, and most importantly she has peace of mind and in a world fraught with problems, that is truly priceless.
This is the second line...
“Hey! I heard some weird noises last night, and woke up this morning to find the quarry bridge completely repaired! It's a miracle of woodworking!”
...and it occurs once you offer items to the community center junimos to get the quarry bridge repaired.
It is also a bald-faced lie.
The junimos are good, don’t get me wrong, but we’ve seen what Robin can do with our own two eyes. She is absolutely incredible at her job, and while I may give it to her she has no idea what junimos are or what they are capable of, we have proof that the act of restoring the bridge in one night is not out of the realm of possibility for her. A miracle, yes, but I’m certain she can beat the junimos’ time.
Lastly, there is one quote from her that is just... it opens up some very interesting questions. When she says...
“My parents were bewildered when I told them I wanted to be a carpenter. They were pretty old-fashioned.”
...how old are her parents when they consider carpentry too new-fashioned for them? Carpentry is one of the world’s oldest professions. If they were old-fashioned, why were they bewildered?
This line is just so fascinating to me. Robin is incredibly skilled, but I cannot rationalize carpentry being too newfangled for parents to wrap their head around. Who were they? Where are they from? I know your secrets, Robin, I know your parents are gods, too.
The third and final piece is the contrasting pieces of the world at large. Just like ours, it’s a little depressing. Joja Corp runs dozens of what even Cyberpunk would consider a dataslave farm. The world is flooded with consumerism run amok, Orwellian surveillance, and rampant urbanization. The Ferngill Republic is in the middle of a war with the Gotoro Empire and Kent still suffers PTSD from being in a prisoner of war camp.
Stardew Valley isn’t just a town to retire in, it is a place of respite and healing. There are three confirmed magic users deeply tied to the town’s mystical roots. The bears speak and encourage you to manage the world around you. You are rewarded for restoring balance to the valley by being able to recycle things you don’t need. Your main resource in the game, gold, also doesn’t matter that much; if it ever slips into the negative, nothing bad ever happens. You must just work to raise it back up. There is no lose condition in the game.
In many respects it is similar to the Gaiaism philosophy that all living beings are connected, each relying and depending on each other in order to maintain a peaceful coexistence. You help Shane with his nihilism and depression, Sebastian with his ability to express and accept affection, Sam with his dreams, Kent with his problems, Leah with her ambitions, Haley with her generosity and narcissism, or even simple goals like Penny’s idea of a quiet domestic life.
Whether it is the addicted, lost, or scorned, everyone is welcome and everyone can have a home in Stardew Valley. No one embodies this more than Robin who just wants a simple life. Whether it is her own house or her own boat during the Dance of the Moonlight Jellies, Robin builds it herself. The feel of wood grain, the smell of lacquer, the stickiness of stain, the thrum of the saw, and the bite of the axe. Robin doesn’t charge you nearly enough for your house upgrades because it is not about the money. Woodworking is what she loves and she lives in a place where barterism, kindness, family, and friendship substitute so many of life's modern problems and inconveniences.
Friendship increases in the game aren’t just a measurement of achievements, a means of getting more recipes, or more candles lit on a grave. You are making friends and getting to know these people for who they are and everyone’s life is bettered because of it. The amount of love I’ve seen for Linus is just staggering. Shane, in all of his melancholy and despite him not being a suitor in the original version of the game, is loved by so many. I know some despise Haley, but I love that I was able to show her what kindness can do for people.
You are in a gentle and loving place, and you are loved.
What a better place for a god to reside? A quiet town filled with peace and love, seeped in nature and the old magics of yore. A loving mate, a family to raise. Land to share with those that forage from its bounty. It’s all she needs.
Robin’s role in all of this? She desires neither worship nor admiration. She is just a friend. A god, certainly, but a friend first and foremost who is just settling down in a quiet town looking for a little peace.

2020.10.28 17:05 the_madeline Another Model Predicts Biden Victory: "The Thirteen Keys to the Presidency"

Not to be the model guy, but I find these are interesting counterpoints to polling, so I share them here.
Allan Lichtman is a quantitative historian at American University who developed a model of thirteen true/false statements to predict the popular vote in presidential elections. If seven or more of the statements are true, the incumbent is predicted to win. If seven or more are false, the challenger is predicted to win.
Lichtman’s model deserves to be taken seriously, as it has correctly predicted the national popular vote outcome of every U.S. presidential election since 1984, including George H. W. Bush’s comeback from nearly 20% behind in the polls in 1988 and Al Gore’s narrow win in 2000.
The 13 Keys to the Presidency
  1. After the midterm election, the incumbent party holds more seats in the U.S. House of Representatives than it did after the preceding midterm election. (FALSE: Biden)
  2. The incumbent-party nominee gets at least two-thirds of the vote on the first ballot at the nominating convention. (TRUE: Trump)
  3. The incumbent-party candidate is the sitting president. (TRUE: Trump)
  4. There is no third-party or independent candidacy that wins at least 5% of the vote. (TRUE: Trump)
  5. The economy is not in recession during the campaign. (FALSE: Biden)
  6. Real (constant-dollar) per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth for the preceding two terms. (FALSE: Biden)
  7. The administration achieves a major policy change during the term, on the order of the New Deal or the first-term Reagan “revolution.” (TRUE: Trump)
  8. There has been no major social unrest during the term, sufficient to cause deep concerns about the unraveling of society. (FALSE: Biden)
  9. There is no broad recognition of a scandal that directly touches the president. (FALSE: Biden)
  10. There has been no military or foreign policy failure during the term, substantial enough that it appears to undermine America’s national interests significantly or threaten its standing in the world. (TRUE: Trump)
  11. There has been a military or foreign policy success during the term substantial enough to advance America’s national interests or improve its standing in the world. (FALSE: Biden)
  12. The incumbent-party candidate is charismatic or is a national hero. (FALSE: Biden)
  13. The challenger is not charismatic and is not a national hero. (TRUE: Trump)
Per Lichtman, Biden is predicted to win because he holds seven keys, one more than Trump.
Now this may seem squishier than some of the hard-data quantitative models out there, but it deserves our consideration as a temperature-check of public opinion. It also summarizes variables that other models take seriously: the incumbent advantage (Key 3), the primary-model advantage (Key 2), economic indicators a la Erickson (Keys 5 and 6), and so on.
Though I broadly agree with Lichtman, I will say that the some of the keys seem hard to adjudicate. Does it complicate things that the economy was doing so well before the pandemic? And should foreign policy and military policy be so directly intertwined? I would say Trump's presidency is marred by foreign policy failure but he has also enjoyed some military successes, for instance withdrawing troops from the Middle East in numbers Obama wanted to but could not. If you click the link above, there is further discussion on tipping points between keys.
What do you think?

2020.10.28 15:34 agnusdei1015 Saturn and it's relation to number 322

Saturn and it's relation to number 322
I know a lot of you dont believe in numerology, but this is something I have to post, I really dont believe in coincidences anymore, and maybe other people will recognize something that I didnt.
So first of all I've come across a post here on the sub depicting Saturnian symbolism posted by u/candleman100 , and I found the ALL SEEING EYE is there. I dont know about its connection with Saturn, but I know about the triangle symbolism. Its the symbol of number 322.

https://preview.redd.it/sn5yqeghcuv51.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10e08260be47948b081c1dea1c22f24b9235d650
How is the number 322 connected to the triangle? Its from an ancient babylonian tablet called Plimpton 322, which is the foundation of todays matemathics and trigonometry(triangle).
I believe its also connected to Artificial Intelligence, its connected to TPTB's agenda. But how is it connected to Saturn?
I've found some weird connections, thats currently happening in our reality, even in some movies, interviews, etc.
Did you guys know that Corona has started just before the great conjunction between Saturn and Pluto? I think last time it happened world just had one the biggest pandemic in our history, the Black Plague. I was trying to find connection between the number, Saturn, and astrological transits. Here's what I found.
Saturn (Government,law,restriction,time) has entered Aquarius(Technology,future)
Saturn is entering Aquarius on 22nd of March around 3:22pm
Now what does this mean?
The Saturn Archetype in astrology
  • The Saturn archetype represents the reality principle and includes our experience of restriction, limitation, structure, boundaries, physical manifestation and time. It’s associated with security and stability, organisation, control, judgement and the law. As well as authority, responsibility, wisdom, tradition and the past, maturity, old age, and death.
  • Saturn energy is slow, heavy and dense, bringing repression, defeat, failure and endings. But also increased patience, effort, endurance, and concentration, all necessary for building structures that last. As the Lord of Karma, Saturn also represents necessity, harvest, and reaping what you sow.
  • Saturn is linked to Kronos, the Titan who castrated Ouranos, and then swallowed his own children. But to the Romans, Saturn ruled over a Golden Age of abundance.
An interpretation by Tim Boucher, regarding Saturn (Government, law) entering into Aquarius (Technology, future):
"How many years this will take to happen, I can’t say. Maybe five years? But the world is going to look like this. You are going to walk around with an augmented reality device, as well as a variety of devices whose purpose is to record, sort and “index” audio, visual and other information about your experience of life. You will become the spiderbot for Google walking around and “crawling” the physical earth. You will be paid a modest amount for your data-collection efforts. We think of these technologies now as “tracking” and “surveillance” but those terms will fall away and be replaced by terms which more accurately reflect the breadth of cultural change these devices will entail. By way of analogy, you could think of your experience of life as going something like this. You walk around and perceive augmented or mixed reality through your headset.
Most people will eventually gravitate towards \only* perceiving reality through these devices because they add increased levels of richness of information. Then they will of course be implanted and you’ll experience only this world from birth. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Before that time, companies will begin to store fully immersive digital simulations of your entire life experience. Think of it in terms of the online virtual world, SecondLife. The devices which are constantly monitoring you and recording your experience will transmit this information to an engine which will parse it and use it to create a stored 4-D copy of your entire life, from start to finish. At any time you like (if you have enough money), you will be able to access your own memories and fully experience them as though they were happening to you again. You (or the government-company which graciously leases you this technology) will also be able to license content from your life to other users, and be able to directly trade experiences. People who have a certain level of shared or common experiences will form clusters of consensus reality, consensciousness. What do you think your MySpace friends [remember this was written in 2009] are for? Social networking online? Reality clusters. Who you allow into your shared experience of life. Who you give your world key to.::snip::*
There will be an immediate and furious backlash against this destruction of human identity, time and space as the outer biological limits of the human mind and information-processing faculties are quickly reached. A resulting planned push towards posthumanism will be made, based upon the arguments that most of our experiences at this point are all completely stored electronically. Ghost in the machine. Uploaded consciousness will be offered to transcend these processing and bandwidth limitations of reality, at which point what we think of as a “human” would be more compatible with what we think of nowadays as a “subculture.” We will consist of language patterns and inter-locking sets of shared experiences."

Now notice the numbers regarding confirmed corona cases on the graph:
22nd of March 2020, 322 thousand recorded cases, also the curve starts to rise from that day.
Saturn is now in a retrograde station, which means it appears to move backward(sleeping), and is in the sign of Capricorn, and will station back in Aquarius on 17th of December 2020, which is just a few days before the start of the winter equinox and the Great Conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter.
"People have been talking (and singing) about the dawning of the Age of Aquarius for decades now, and many astrologers believe that the monumental "great conjunction" talking place on December 21, 2020 is the cosmic event that's officially heralding it in. On that date, the two largest planets in the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn (which are known as the greater benefic and greater malefic planets, respectively) will align in the sign of Aquarius for the first time in nearly 400 years. Both Jupiter and Saturn represent social issues in our lives and relate to authority and leadership, and they only form a conjunction aspect every couple decades — so when they do, it's a big deal, which is why it's known as a great conjunction. This is the standout cosmic event of the latter half of 2020, and it'll catalyze some serious shifts.
"In December of 2020, we are in for the beginning of a new age, [as] Saturn and Jupiter will be aligning in the sign of Aquarius," astrologer Aaya Samadhi tells Bustle. "This alignment is so significant because it means we’ll continue to have these two planets come together in air signs until 2059."

Youtube video shows they aired the program at 3:22pm

In the movie called Purge, the event starts 7pm evening at 21st of March, ending 22nd of March 7am
Georgia Guidestones opening date
And of course, everyone heard of Skull&Bones

Genesis 3:22 possible reference to transhumanism?
Blackstone to acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7 billion
”Schwarzman attended Yale University at the same time as George W Bush and both were members of the elite Skull and Bones society.”
“Both The Group and The Order are unwilling or unable to bring about a global society by voluntary means, so they opted for coercion. To do this they have created wars and revolutions, they have ransacked public treasuries, they have oppressed, they have pillaged, they have lied -- even to their own countrymen.”
I know a lot of people doesnt believe in gematria and numerology, but this cannot be a coincidence.

Genesis 3:22 translated into numbers equals 322
CV-19 = 322-AI, according to gematria.
Another interesting observations regarding this number:
-Bob Lazar started his famous video on 3/22 at 9pm
-Elon Musk launched SpaceX rocket up at 3:22pm in 2020
-George H. W was dead for 3 months and 22 days on 22nd of March
Im not sure if this is all real, these are only my observations, but I dont believe in coincidences and I think this number has a very deep and occult meaning. Let me know what you think. I know it sounds crazy, but please try to be open minded. Help me dig deeper.
Thanks for reading.

DATA HOSTED WITH ♥ BY PASTEBIN.COM - DOWNLOAD RAW - SEE ORIGINAL
  1. Recently, I was accused of cheating during a few of my Minecraft Speedrun live streams. This accusation comes with some mathematical backing, and that’s what makes the accusation more serious than a willy nilly random one.
  2. A curious viewer who noticed that my pearl luck seemed to be crazy high, decided to go through and count my pearl barters along with how many barters I did. This user posted the stats on twitter, pointing out how crazy it was, but without any accusations of cheating at the time. Some users in the speedrun discord, then reasonably decided to calculate the odds of such luck occurring. The initial calculations were around 1 in 1 billion. Obviously this is a statistically significant number, and the mods and others started to look into it.
  3. Now, due to the fact that I am not a statistics major and I am by no means an expert at mathematics, this makes it a little harder for me to defend myself. From my standpoint, I didn’t cheat, and there must be an explanation for why either the data is incorrect, or the situation happened in the first place.
  4. Now again, because of the fact that I’m not amazing at statistics, more of this will be related to the non-statistics side of things than the statistics side of things. Although, I will go over both. Sections will be split with large titles. I’m going to start with the non statistics side of things, and end with the statistics.
  5. The Why
  6. The why is a question that I’m sure is usually much easier to answer than any of the other questions, but in this case it isn’t. I’m a popular Youtuber, who actually gets less views by streaming and uploading speedruns. On my Youtube, I get 9,766,666 views on average on my speedrun videos, and I get 21,528,571 average views on my non-speedrun videos in a similar time frame. This is less than half as many views on average. On my speed running streams, I get around 60,000 to 80,000 live concurrent viewers. On normal streams, I get around 130,000 live concurrent viewers. Again, much less.
  7. The reason this matters at all, is to show that the normal motive of “Get a world record and millions of views from it”, goes completely away with me. On top of that, it was many days after my last stream that this started getting looked into. I had already said I wasn’t uploading my PB on either of my channels, and I didn’t upload it on either.
  8. As for 1.16 runs, I stated on many occasions that I was going for a sub 25 time, and that as soon as I got one I would stop. I really wanted to get to speedrunning 1.15, because that’s the category that I feel most comfortable in. I had mentioned to a speedrun moderator my plans before, as well as many times on stream. I got a 25:06 during the streams, but I just wanted to get just below 25 minutes, even if it was 24:59. So the question is, why would I cheat? Obviously there’s many answers to that, whether it be ego or convenience or whatever else, but most of those can be disputed fairly easily.
  9. The biggest thing that I think should make “the why” suspicious is what happened AFTER the 1.16 runs. After I ran 1.16, I hopped off and one of the very next days I ran 1.15. Now this doesn’t seem significant, except for the fact that I had a run where I entered the stronghold at 17:45. The current record at the time being 21:26. Meaning I had over 3:30 to beat the game to get world record, and longer just to get a top 5 time. I was just short on pearls due to ender men spawning, and wasn’t able to get world record.
  10. However, in an alternate universe where I get a few endermen spawns on the way to the stronghold during the night, which is actually the more likely scenario, I end up in the end around 18:30, with a pretty damn good chance at getting world record (I had the beds to one cycle). The interesting thing isn’t that I got this time, it’s that I got this time on a non modded client, and I got this time with generally average RNG, on a verifiable seed that can’t be cheated. If this run wasn’t cheated, obviously that would probably imply that my other (3) 1.15 world records weren’t cheated either. This is something that seems fairly accepted amongst the mod team and speedrun discord, especially because my initial world record was on a very unoptimized category where I chopped wood for 7 minutes.
  11. So then that poses again the question, why. Why when I know that I am fully capable of taking a world record legit, on stream, on a different version that I care about, would I decide to randomly cheat in a very specific way on a version that I have clarified I don’t really care about on many occasions. Why would I risk my entire reputation just to get a sub 25 time on a version I don’t care about, and then not cheat to get world record on a version I main. Now, that makes total sense, but only if you believe that I didn’t cheat previously. So then the question I have for you if you believe that I cheated my offline 1.15 runs, is again, why would I do this then? In your eyes, I was able to get away with faking 3 world records, offline, with very little questions asked and no accusations. If that was the case, why would I stream myself cheating for no reason? I’ve expressed on many occasions in private and public my disdain for streaming speedruns, and that I prefer to run offline by a large margin. I had also gotten explicit permission to run offline from Willz, and based on the speedrun rules it was perfectly fine. I also ran 1.15 online and had near identical results to my offline runs that were published.
  12. If I was cheating for “clout” or any benefit, why would I not just splice a 1.16 world record offline and look like a god? Or why would I not just do the exact same thing for 1.15. Why would I settle for live streaming for a sub 25 time, and then moving on to running a category for WR that doesn’t even have the same system I supposedly cheated (bartering). To me, that doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, and I feel like to most reasonable people it wouldn’t either.
  13. Now continuing on with “the why”, let’s talk about further motive. I care about speedrunning a lot as a whole, and I think that’s something that’s very easily provable through my public and private actions. I’ve helped grow the community and the major members of it, while always trying to make sure that speedrunning has integrity. I’ve helped the mod team on multiple occasions try to and succeed at catching splicers and cheaters.
  14. I’ve always been extremely open with the mod team, and I’ve even ran speedrunning events before in the past where I let the speedrun discord participate. I’ve always been open and honest about my thoughts on policy, my thoughts on different versions, and with when and how much I actually speedrun.
  15. I believe that it would take an idiot to decide to cheat after growing their reputation in the way that I have, and with the capability that I have. Now it’s fine for you to assume that I am an idiot, but when looking at all the evidence it’s just hard to come up with “the why”. This is a scary argument, but if I really was cheating, I could have submitted offline runs in both major categories that were world records and walked away with no way whatsoever to prove that I cheated. I’m not a random that would be defaulted as a cheater, I’m a trusted runner and if I provided sufficient “proof” to the mods, those offline world records would be verified.
  16. There’s many many smarter ways that I could have cheated if I was cheating, especially if I was supposedly going through the effort of creating a mod or modifying the game code. This doesn’t clear anything, but it just again, amplifies the question of why?
  17. That’s it for this section, and again, this part isn’t about the statistics, this is just completely calling into question the motive.
  18. The How
  19. The how is a question of how someone could have cheated in this situation, and why different methods may or may not be unlikely. The first thing to mention during this section is a data pack. This seems to be the most common accusation, especially in the comments on the video regarding it, and also by quite a few people in the discord and other places. After my 1.16 PB of 19 minutes, I zipped up the world file directly after, and uploaded it to google drive within 5 minutes. With this information, the mods were able to verify that I did not use a data pack, or at least that it is extremely unlikely that I did. They can verify time stamps and see when certain folders and places were edited, as well as verify the timing of the world, and the fact that it wasn’t edited. This cancels out data packs as a possible solution based on the evidence.
  20. Another way that was mentioned, is to just directly modify game files. Although, according to multiple people with knowledge of the game, it is not possible without an actual mod or mod loader, or modifying the actual game code. This means that it cannot have just been opening a text file and changing “piglinbarters.txt” or whatever people have implied.
  21. This leaves the 3rd and final option, which is a modded client or just a mod through a mod loader. I used fabric while on 1.16, because that is what almost every speedrunner uses now. It allows you to use sodium, and other performance enhancing mods that are approved by speedrun.com. Sodium boosts my performance and allows me to use higher render distances, which I’ve mentioned in the discord before, and is just obvious.
  22. This would make the most likely scenario a mod that is in your mods folder, that uses the fabric loader. Now there is no way possible for me to specifically prove that this wasn’t the case, however again I can continue to talk about the how. In order to do this, you would have to have coding knowledge when it comes to coding mods especially fabric ones. Now, the reason most people assume this makes me suspicious is because I’m a developer. However, I’ve never coded a mod in my life still to this day. I have coded many plugins, but I don’t even know where to get started with a mod.
  23. There is plenty of evidence to back this up as well. I run a patreon where I release all the mods and plugins that George and I use in our videos. Again, mods and plugins. Now I’ve probably released around 30 plugins, and 2 (shortly going to be 3), mods. The mods are coded using Fabric, however they are not coded by me or George. Out of the 30 plugins, 29 of them are either coded by George or myself. Out of the mods, 0 out of 3 are coded by George or myself. They are actually coded by 2 separate mod developers, under pay, because I don’t know how to code mods. I have also mentioned the fact that I don’t know how to code mods on many different live streams, and even in a large Q&A. This was around and well before this drama, very consistently. I have also mentioned in private, even to speedrun.com moderators that I don’t know how to code mods.
  24. As recently as September 7th, around a month before this incident, I was even specifically asked about whether I knew how to code specifically fabric mods, by a speedrun moderator in order for them to get my help to develop a speedrun cheat detection client, and I said then that I specifically have no experience coding mods and know nothing about fabric. I had no reason to lie, and I did try and help them on the creative side of things, but not the development due to the fact that I have no experience. All of this is obviously provable. I don’t even know what development environment I would code a mod like this in, and I have and will willingly submit to giving up any of my development environment files on any of my devices. I use eclipse for coding plugins, and I’ve never used anything other than eclipse other than maybe to try something out.
  25. I believe that with all of this information, it makes it very unlikely that I custom coded a fabric mod to modify piglin barters. Again, extremely unlikely does not mean impossible, but still, extremely unlikely. Now I’m not sure what other methods of cheating there could be, but these are the ones that I’ve been accused of.
  26. As for further on the how, we also have to talk about HOW the cheating took place. Meaning, ignoring the method of injecting cheating, how did the cheating work if there was cheating. In this case, the assumption is that piglin barters were increased from ~5% to ~15%. I’m not extremely well versed in statistics, but even I can say that that would be extremely dumb.
  27. Not only is it a very cave man way to cheat, it’s also very unlikely given the fact that it’s a mod. If someone goes through the effort to cheat using a mod, I’m sure it would take 2 seconds to make it be in a very controllable way. If someone did know how to code mods, they would probably recognize that controlling when piglins drop pearls would be much better than controlling how much they drop pearls. Even a speedrun moderator mentioned that if they were to cheat, that is how they would do it. Now in this case, although you can’t 100% prove that is the case, you can prove that again, it’s extremely unlikely. There is even a time where I trade 1 gold for 1 pearl trade and then quit the game within seconds after.
  28. If I was intentionally cheating and I knew that drop rates were altered, or I was in control of the drop rates myself, why would I do this. T his also brings into question behavioral changes, of which I don’t believe there are any, or at least not widespread ones. Throughout my runs I still collect a lot of extra gold, and a lot of the time I do piglin trades while looking for or before finding a fortress. If I knew that I could guaranteed get pearls on piglin trades, why would I waste time doing it on seeds that I might not find a fortress on. On top of that, why would I trade on runs that I knew were essentially dead runs. That would just make me suspicious for no reason whatsoever. On top of THAT, why would I give myself a lot of extra pearls on runs when I didn’t need them at all? There is even a run where I got 26 pearls, and I believe it was 5 pearl trades. Why would I need 5 pearl trades? And if I had a mod to modify piglin barters, why didn’tmake sure they had sufficient pearls? Traded for 6 or 8 pearls every time? There’s a lot of dumb questions here that make the accusation of cheating just seem absurd given the actual affects of the supposed cheating.
  29. So again, that calls into question how did the cheating take place? That doesn’t disprove any kind of statistics, but it does call into question a belief on whether someone cheated or not. I gave the analogy in the speedrun discord before, but, if someone like Illumina found an 11 eye end portal, but they had already collected all of the pearls and blaze rods needed for a full portal, despite an 11 eye being virtually impossible statistically, would the consensus be that Illumina was a cheater? Of course it wouldn’t, because the why and the how contradict the data. I believe that although this does not apply to my PB run, it applies to every run before it, especially runs where the run was completely dead and I said screw it lets trade.
  30. The only way any of this would make sense at all is if I didn’t have any reason to believe my piglin barters would be luckier than average.
  31. That’s really it for the how, and now to move on to statistics, the part that I know the least about.
  32. The Data
  33. The data presented is as follows: Over the course of my 6 most recent 1.16 streams, my piglin barters over a 263 trade sample were significantly more lucky than usual. I traded for 41 pearl trades, over the 263 sized sample. That is ~15% odds, instead of ~5% odds. The reason this is significant is because of the sample size. You wouldn’t expect to see that many pearl trades over that many trades basically ever. According to people who are actually good at math, it’s a 1 in 40 billion chance. Which is obviously absurd if the data is completely correct.
  34. I decided to talk with some independent sources which are decent with statistics to help me understand the data itself. Now, the pearl trade statistics seems to be accurate. The only thing that hurts the data itself, is how the data was collected. Again, the data was collected because of what I said at the beginning of this document. An overly curious viewer who noticed I got lucky pearl trades decided to collect the data. This in itself, means that the data was collected because the data seemed inconsistant. On top of that, the more pearl trades you get in a row, the more likely that your sample will be smaller, which in a small sample contributes a lot to the validity of the overall data.
  35. Rather than taking a truly random sample, the sample starts when the luck seems off, and the sample ends as soon as I hit a personal best goal of 19 minutes, because that’s when I said I would stop streaming (sub 25). Although this can be touted as a “random set of data”, it is most definitely not. There are 5 other 1.16 streams that I streamed on twitch that can be rummaged through that are NOT included in the data, and there are also thousands of offline runs that I have done myself that also have data. On top of that, again, the fact that I got very lucky, means that I trade less, which means that the sample size itself will be forcibly smaller. This, all inclusive, is what is called “Sampling bias”.
  36. As described by http://www.scholarpedia.org/, “In an unbiased sample, differences between the samples taken from a random variable and its true distribution, or differences between the samples of units from a population and the entire population they represent, should result only from chance.” and “ If their differences are not only due to chance, then there is a sampling bias.” According to this, and basically all statistics experts, a biased sample will cause problems in the measure of probability. As a quote, “any statistics computed from a bias sample has the potential to be consistently erroneous.” Consistently erroneous data is data that falls outside of what is acceptable and should be rejected.
  37. Although the data may appear to be unbiased due to the fact that it’s my most recent specifically 1.16 streams, it isn’t. The way it was collected, and the why it was collected makes it significantly biased sampling. The data was collected because the specific sample seemed off, and the data was collected in a very non-random way, with a significant leaning towards more pearls rather than less. Obviously this makes the situation much more complicated, because there’s not that much more data to go off of due to the fact that I run almost completely offline. Although still to this day, I have seen no charts or data collected from my previous 1.16 streams. This is called cherry picking, as even stated by a Minecraft developer, (highlight) “it's actually a logical fallacy - called cherry picking...choosing only the information which supports my claim and ignoring any that doesn't” (end)
  38. Obviously due to the fact that this is Minecraft, and I’m being accused of cheating, people can just say that “that data doesn’t matter because he could have only turned on his cheats recently”, but that’s making an assumption and is unfair when talking about collecting unbiased data. The fact is, I got my best and luckiest runs I’ve ever had while streaming for my PB. I had plenty and plenty of runs, on stream and off, where I traded tons of gold for no pearls. It’s just that during this 263 trade sample, I did not.
  39. Again, although this doesn’t affect the actual data, only the sample size, there is also another around ~40 gold I believe that was traded, but unaccounted for in the data due to lack of seeing what was traded for. Although we don’t know if these trades were pearls or not, the fact of the matter is that IF they were pearls we would probably know, and if I hadn’t received pearls prior to these final trades, we would definitely know what they are. Which violates one of the only rules that is mentioned in binomial distribution. “For identical trials, probability of success must be the same for each trial.” In this case, the probability of success is not technically the same for each trial, even though it may seem like it. Because you are more likely to notice and collect pearl trades than you are to notice and collect non pearl trades. The probability of collected success actually varies depending on the situation. Meaning, if you take each time I stop to trade with piglins as a separate data collection point (~21 different times), the gold that is unaccounted for is likely to be not pearls, but it is very unlikely that pearls go unaccounted for. On top of that, one of the other keys to binomial distribution, is that “the outcome of one trial does not affect the outcome of the other”. Which in this case, is up for debate whether that is true or not.
  40. If you look at trades as having 3 possible results which are: PEARL, NOT PEARL, UNKNOWN. And you consider each Piglin trading session a different data collection session, that rule for binomial distribution does not apply. Because if there is a pearl trade, a very unlikely thing, almost all of the rest of the results from that trial (any gold on the ground), is now UNKNOWN. Meaning that the data ends up being distributed like so:
  41. NOT PEARL
  42. NOT PEARL
  43. PEARL
  44. NOT PEARL
  45. NOT PEARL
  46. NOT PEARL
  47. NOT PEARL
  48. NOT PEARL
  49. PEARL
  50. UNKNOWN
  51. UNKNOWN
  52. UNKNOWN
  53. UNKNOWN
  54. You can replicate that over and over with yourself, unless you stay to see all of the trades even after two successful pearl trades. So again, the outcome of a previous trial DOES affect the outcome of the next trial. It would be naive to assume that it doesn’t.
  55. It very much affects the sample, which is again where bias sampling is very important. Obviously within the sample set it seems incredibly unlikely (1 in 40 billion), but when you start talking about why the sample itself is a matter of sampling bias, it starts to seem more likely. If you decide to pool every run submitted to 1.16 random seed glitchless, this may seem like a completely random sample. However, you will almost definitely get much higher pearl trade rates than they should be. Even though you’re taking every single run. The bias is applied because of the fact that the reason you’re sampling them is that they were good runs submitted to the leaderboards. Now, there is a chance this isn’t the case because sometimes people submit very long runs, but the point is that sampling and how the sample is collected is VERY important.
  56. On top of all of that, we are talking about Minecraft and Java. Everything is much more complicated than just strictly ~5%. There’s glitches, there’s things dependent on the world, there’s things that can be corrupted, there’s operating system issues, and plenty of other things that could again fall under the “probability of success must be the same” caveat of binomial distribution. But again, these things are unlikely, and even more unlikely when talking about something as specific as pearl trades which are necessary for a good run.
  57. Misuse of data
  58. Now we can assume with sampling bias taken into account, and everything else, that it’s still very very unlikely that the pearl trades were this lucky. Just much more likely than 1 in 40 billion. Even if it’s 1 in a million, that’s still extremely unlikely.
  59. (bold, underline) However, the likelihood of an event occurring is not the likelihood of someone cheating. (end) Which is where I see a lot of people getting very confused. If the likelihood of an event happening is 1 in a million, that doesn’t mean that there is a 99.9999% chance that they were cheating for that event to happen.
  60. This is seen in this example: As writing this, I went into xQC’s most recent live stream, and his most recent pearl trades. In this completely randomly selected sample, in a 31 OR LESS trade period, xQC got 33 pearls. Which at minimum is 5 pearl trades, and on average would be at least 6. Now if my calculations are correct, using the same binomial distribution method used against me, this has a 0.296479541% chance with 6 pearl trades, a 0.050943885% chance with 7 pearl trades, and a 1.43774716% with 5 pearl trades.
  61. Again, on this random sample, that is very unlikely, but that does not mean that there is a 99.95% chance that xqc cheated. That just means that it has a very small chance of happening.
  62. So a common misconception with the data, is using the inverse of the percentage chance of something happening, as the percentage chance that someone cheated. This is not how the data should be applied. There is most definitely a correlation, however it is not equivalent.
  63. Final Conclusion
  64. The only reason that I’m even taking the time to write up this document, is because I care about the speedrun community. I came in as an outsider, and obviously there’s a lot of people that dislike me because of my community, or my stans, or my attitude or whatever else. I’m sure a lot of those people would still even recognize that I’ve had a positive impact on the community, and that I’ve tried to contribute in countless ways whether it be promoting top runners, assisting the mod team, or just bringing attention to speedrunning itself. Now, there’s some people that even if I am 1000% proven innocent, will still say I’m a cheater, because it fits their narrative.
  65. Regardless of that, my assumption about everything is that it’s just a very unlikely occurrence that is much more likely than the data that is being presented makes it seem, due to sampling bias and other factors. I spoke with a Minecraft dev about it for quite a long time, and the dev pretty much came to that same conclusion. I’m sure I’ll probably find myself talking to other developers and staffers as well. The sad thing is that I’m definitely not an expert in statistics so it is much harder for me to defend myself than if I was. (american education)
  66. As for what I would suggest the mod team to do, I would suggest that they take stuff like this extremely seriously, and decide to hold offline runs and even online runs to a much higher level of scrutiny. Before all of this, I almost decided to stop running due to the fact that I recognized there is a high likelihood that top runs may be fake or cheated, and that really discouraged me. But I was encouraged when mods caught a few top submitted runs for being fake. (this is provable again with messages with the mod team). I’ve seen some good progress on the speedrun client, and I’m fully in support of that, and I used to suggest a server all the time. I want speedrunning to be free of cheaters, and I think knowing that it is is what makes it enjoyable for people that do run.
  67. That being said, I’m complacent with the mods removing my 1.16 run and me stopping running until a speedrun client is fully fleshed out and developed, as again, I think having trust that top runners are not cheaters is what makes speedrunning enjoyable, and I don’t want to take that away from anyone. I already have a successful career, and I have a lot of fun speedrunning myself, and it’s upsetting that this has happened in the first place, however, due to the fact that I’m not a math expert I have no real way of proving my innocence through statistics.
  68. This same scenario may have happened before, or may happen in the future hundreds of times, but we probably wouldn’t ever see it because it’s not “dream speedrunning” and they don’t have hundreds of thousands of eyes on them. I honestly don’t care at all about 1.16, I never thought I would get the time I got, and I only wanted to get a single run to submit to the 1.16 leaderboard before I tried what I was actually passionate about, which is 1.14/15.
  69. I’ve been left a little in the dark when it comes to the process behind the scenes, but I haven’t really heard anything good come from the mods, (and some of them definitely don’t like me at all), so I’m not really expecting anything good to be announced in my favor. I decided to write this instead of making a video, because even though it will probably be spread a little bit, it’s not going to be seen by millions of people who could then bring hate towards the people who are leveling these accusations, as I believe that most of them have good intentions (even though I know that some of them definitely don’t.). However, depending on how annoying things get, I may be forced to make a video going over things I said here, and a lot of other things. Time will tell with that though.
  70. That’s really all there is to say I guess, and that’s my perspective.

2020.10.28 00:02 autotldr America's protest crackdown: five months after George Floyd, hundreds face trials and prison

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 92%. (I'm a bot)
Since the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May, millions of Americans have marched in cities big and small to protests racial violence and police brutality.
More than five months since the start of the unrest, hundreds of these protesters have been slapped with serious charges by federal and local prosecutors, according to researchers and a review of court data.
Although some district attorneys have declined to prosecute protest cases brought to them by municipal police departments, other local prosecutors' offices have repeatedly partnered with police to bring charges.
Her protest charges have since been dropped, which means she is no longer threatened with deportation, and her ankle monitor was removed.
Once the protest was over officers surrounded Arata and took her to jail, she said, accusing her of multiple felonies including "False imprisonment"and conspiracy.
The crackdown has had a chilling effect on others in San Luis Obispo who are now scared to protest, Arata said.

2020.10.27 23:01 u_madi_bro Finding the Andersons

My most stubborn brick walls are my great-great-grandparents, Charles and Helene Anderson. I've known their names from the minute my grandparents knew I was interested in finding them. For a long time, I was fine knowing next to nothing about them, but then again I was coursing down my grandfather's paternal line, so what did it matter if the Anderson's waited? Not good enough now, so I'm asking for help, especially because their descendants are relatively few and far between, and I might be the only one trying to find them anymore.
So, here's what I know:
Charles Adolf Ingaman Anderson m. Helen Walstad, and had at least one daughter - Harriet, my great grandmother. Helen was said to be an orphan, and to have a brother that stayed in Norway with the aim of being an artist. She (and her unknown brother) was said to have lived with a priest's family back in Norway, and upon the death of the head of the household, they were both given money in the will. That is all the information my grandparents had, but it got me started.
Minnesota Marriage records have Chas A Anderson marrying Helene T Walstad 10 Jul 1893 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. The original doc has two witnesses, Albert Wold and Alice Christianson, but as far as I can tell, they're not relatives, so provide no hints.
Church records from Trinity Lutheran in Minneapolis have Chas A J Anderson & M. Helene baptizing 3 children, all on 3 Dec 1899: Clarence Herbert (born 2 Aug 1894), Arthur William (born 22 Aug 1896), and Harriet (born 5 Aug 1899). The sponsors are listed as Georg Wagner, Bertha Wagner, and Alice Olson. The next row in the record has Georg and Bertha's child's baptism record, in which Charles and Helene are listed as sponsors, but again, none of these sponsors screams family.
The Minnesota 1895 Census has more leads but they're so vague it hurts. There are extra Andersons at the same address, but they are just as likely to be total strangers & neighbors/boarders as they are to be family, given the age gap and the fact that they were born in Minnesota before Charles was living in Minnesota. They lived at 1221 9th Street South. Charles AJ, Helen, and Clarence, all of the right ages. Charles is listed as a resident for only 6 years, 6 months, so I'm not sure if that's an immigration date, or he was somewhere else in the country for a while.
US Census of 1900 has the other kids and a little more info, including the fact that they live near the Deaconess' Institute in Minneapolis. Charles is listed as arriving in 1880 and being naturalized, but I haven't found that record yet. Helen is listed as arriving in 1890, but it's not marked whether she was also naturalized.
The Minnesota 1905 Census has the family as a whole, but the people in their building have varying last names, so again, likely just neighbors. They were living at 1312 Twenty Fourth Street by this time, but there's not much information. Charles is listed as being in Minnesota for 20 years, but again, it's unclear. Helen is listed with 18 years.
Then, tragedy. Charles' obituary shows up in the 17 Jan 1907 edition of the Star Tribune and reads: "Charles A Anderson died yesterday at the Norwegian Deaconess’ hospital. He was 44 years old, and leaves a widow and three children. Funeral services at 2pm Saturday from the residence, 1314 East Twenty-fourth street. Interment at Layman’s."
Searching the records for Layman's Cemetery has been no help, I can't find him under Chas, Charles, or any of his supposed names, but I did find his death record with the Minnesota Historical Society, and have ordered it, but nothing back from them yet. (Edit to add) I did think to see if the Deaconess’ Institute kept records on their patients, but so far I haven’t found any. Minnesota Historical Society has records in their library, but they seem to be more about the nuns and the institute than the patients. Might be an avenue to try in the future but not urgent right now.
Helen and the kids show up on the 1910 Census at the same address as before. Helen is listed as widowed and working as a laundress, the kids are all in school, nothing useful to go backward in time, but it's helping me flush out the kids' trees & lives.
Again, Helen's on the 1920 Census, this time with only Clarence and Arthur. She's still a laundress for a private family, Clarence isn't working, and Arthur is driving for Express Co. By that time, Harriet had married my great-grandpa, so that makes sense.
The well ran dry for Helen on Ancestry, so I started looking at the kids, thinking maybe I could get somewhere. Found Clarence's draft card pretty quick, but nothing about his family there. Found more about Arthur, who may have been wounded in WWI, but haven't verified. He did marry, a woman named Alice, and had a son, Arthur R., then passed in 1962. I'll be doing more research there, but haven't done too much, because I'm still going up the tree, not down.
Moved over to Family Search. Found more detail on Arthur's service in WWI in a Family Search Index. Here's where it got interesting. Father's birthplace: Christiania (Olso), Norway. Mother's birthplace: Stavanger, Norway. Checked Clarence's service record to see if he would verify it, but he only listed them as being born in Norway. Clearly, Arthur was the detail-oriented brother.
But! I have hometowns... maybe. If Arthur was right.
So, I start looking through the wiki's for Norweigan Genealogy, and I swear I've looked everywhere for Helen and Charles, but I'm getting no bites. I even succumbed to looking at Ancestry family trees... and I may have discovered that Walstad is an Americanized version of Vølstad, that Helen's "middle" name (really patronym, but Ancestry doesn't have a good way to track that) might be either Thoresdatter or Torgersdatter, but I don't trust trees, especially since not one of them is sourced. But... I did find Vølstad on a map in Rogaland, the same area of Norway as Stavanger. Knowing some Norwegian names are farm names, I started to dig there, and find that Vølstad was indeed a farm, and there is a farm book for it, but no one's biting on my Inter Library Loan so far. I searched the digital archives for Helen Vølstad in both Stavanger and the town containing the farm, but no dice. No dice on the guessed patronyms, either. So far, can't figure out when Helen died, so I haven't found a death certificate. I don't even know whether she actually was an orphan, or if she had a brother who stayed in Norway to become an artist. There are DNA matches along that family line, and I've checked them and their trees out, but again, the ones that track the Vølstads don't have any sources and aren't actually descended from Helen's supposed parents, so they're not too keen on accuracy. I haven't found an obvious Anderson match either, so no luck there.
What am I missing? I feel well and truly blocked.
Edit to add: This community is wonderful. You guys came in and smashed my brick wall in under two days. Forever grateful.

2020.10.27 21:09 psychotrader00 Here is a Market Recap for today Tuesday, October 27, 2020. Please enjoy!

PsychoMarket Recap - Tuesday, October 27, 2020
Stocks traded choppily after yesterday’s selloff, with the indices losing an average of 5% from their October highs. Market participants are closely monitoring the rising number of coronavirus cases in the US and Europe and uncertainty surrounding stimulus and the presidential election a mere week away.
In the US, over the weekend, the US registered coronavirus cases hit a record high with more than 81,000 new cases, according to data gathered from worldometers.info. Yesterday, the US registered 70,000 new cases. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert said the US is still in the “first wave” of the pandemic, given that cases never stabilized to more than a “manageable level.” He explained that while the Northeast has been able to reduce its outbreak, the national baseline never fell to a more manageable number like 10,000 cases per day.
With a worrying surge of cases across Europe, governments have begun imposing a new round of restrictions. Today, the Czech Republic joined France, Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom in enforcing a strict nighttime curfew and placing new restrictions in businesses such as gyms and restaurants.
Yesterday, Speaker Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Mnuchin met for what feels like the hundredth time to discuss the passage of additional stimulus. Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hamill said of the meeting, “The Speaker remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached before the election,” adding that “progress depends on Leader Mitch McConnell.” Today, Senators left Washington for a break ahead of the election. With the election a mere week away and Senators no longer in Washington, chances to pass a bill are extremely thin.
Next Tuesday, November 3rd are the US presidential elections between Joe Biden (D) and President Trump (R). The election is set to be extremely contentious and will have enormous effect on the market for years to come.

2020.10.27 14:43 Oily_Messiah America's protest crackdown: five months after George Floyd, hundreds face trials and prison

Some protesters face stacked charges and threats of deportation; others have been charged with police assault with no reports of injuries
Lee Percy Christian III didn’t think Arizona law enforcement could stop him from protesting – until they locked him up indefinitely.
Earlier this month, Christian, 27, was arrested for “unlawful assembly” after a Black Lives Matter protest in Phoenix and jailed without bond because of outstanding charges from previous demonstrations. Prosecutors later suggested bond be set at $100,000. Christian’s lawyers and a judge agreed he could be released on a lower bond – if he didn’t participate in future public protests.
Christian was mortified, but agreed to sign away his right to protests so he could leave jail – he had spent nine days locked up...
Since the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May, millions of Americans have marched in cities big and small to protests racial violence and police brutality. The demonstrations have been overwhelmingly nonviolent, yet in many jurisdictions law enforcement has responded with force. Tens of thousands of demonstrators, activists and BLM supporters have been arrested.
More than five months since the start of the unrest, hundreds of these protesters have been slapped with serious charges by federal and local prosecutors, according to researchers and a review of court data. Some protesters have faced stacked charges and threats of life sentences. Others have been charged with “assaulting” police officers where there’s no evidence of violence and no reports of injuries. Some arrested protesters have been transferred to immigration authorities....
[F]ederal prosecutors have doubled down on cases involving leftist protesters. From the end of May through October, federal prosecutors have filed more than 300 felony cases related to protests, according to The Prosecution Project (TPP), a research group that tracks political violence. Of those 300, roughly 30% are in Oregon (where nightly protests have received national attention), 9% in New York, 7% in Pennsylvania and 6% in Minnesota.
There are cases in at least 25 other states. The most common allegations include arson, illegal firearm possession, rioting and interfering with officers....
Prosecutors have classified at least 80 cases as involving “interstate” crimes, a move that increases the potential sentence. But the justifications for this enhancement were sometimes flimsy.
A protester in Jacksonville, Florida accused of using a Patron bottle as a weapon was charged with a crime affecting “interstate or foreign commerce”, because Patron liquor is made in Mexico. A protester accused of vandalizing a police car in Utah had charges classified as “interstate” because the car was manufactured in Canada and used on interstate highways....
A DoJ spokesperson declined to comment, but noted that a recent agency memo encouraging US attorneys to pursue specific charges related to “violent riots”....
Bruce Franks Jr, former Missouri state representative and prominent Ferguson activist who now lives in Phoenix, was arrested at a small demonstration honoring Michael Brown on 9 August, and booked into jail on 13 counts, including assaulting officers.
Franks, 36, said officers abruptly grabbed him as he tried to de-escalate tensions that had erupted when a line of officers approached with heavy riot gear and shields. In police files reviewed by the Guardian, officers wrote that a supervisor had advised them to take Franks into custody, noting that he was an organizer. Police shouted at Franks to stop resisting, even though one officer noted he heard Franks respond “OK” as he was arrested.
A judge dismissed a majority of Franks’ charges, but the Maricopa county attorney’s office convened a grand jury to indict him, a process that allows for a closed-door proceeding. He now faces police assault charges even though officers’ reports make no mention of him causing specific injuries....
Máxima Guerrero, a well-known migrant rights activist in Phoenix, was arrested at the end of May when she, along with more than 100 BLM supporters and people in the vicinity, was taken into custody. She was transferred to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) custody, because she is a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (Daca) recipient. Suddenly, she was threatened with deportation to Mexico....
In California, 20-year-old activist Tianna Arata’s life was turned upside down after she helped organize a demonstration in San Luis Obispo, on the central coast, on 21 July.
The college student mobilized after the local sheriff said he had “never seen any indication that systemic racism exists in this county”. Her group marched onto a highway and there were no conflicts with police, she said.
Once the protest was over, however, officers surrounded Arata and took her to jail, she said, accusing her of multiple felonies including “false imprisonment”and conspiracy. The local prosecutor is pursuing 13 misdemeanors against her.
“I was so shaken. Every single protest I’ve ever had any part in, I loudly advocate for nonviolence,” she said. “But they are depicting me as this horrible, evil criminal and trying to ensure jail time.”
After media outlets covered the charges against her, she faced an avalanche of racist hate, she said. Her address was leaked online and people even showed up to her home shouting slurs, she said.

2020.10.27 13:37 KamikazeChief George Monbiot exposes Coronavirus Corruption at the heart of Government

This video is one of the most clinical disections of COVID19 corruption at the heart of Boris Johnson's government I have seen, even down to the ancestral lineages of persistent failures like Dido Harding who get into "The gilded club" via their lineage.
Remember - Dido Harding was running Talk Talk when they lost the data of millions of customers. She now runs our Test and trace system. Dominic Cummings features too.
Video is 8 minutes long. If you can spare the time watch all of it.

2020.10.26 17:46 ammodotcom The USA PATRIOT Act: The Story of an Impulsive Bill that Eviscerated America's Civil Liberties

The USA PATRIOT Act provides a textbook example of how the United States federal government expands its power. An emergency happens, legitimate or otherwise. The media, playing its dutiful role as goad for greater government oversight, demands "something must be done." Government power is massively expanded, with little regard for whether or not what is being done is efficacious, to say nothing of the overall impact on our nation's civil liberties.
No goals are posted, because if targets are hit, this would necessitate the ending or scaling back of the program. Instead, the program becomes normalized. There are no questions asked about whether the program is accomplishing what it set out to do. It is now simply a part of American life and there is no going back.
The American public largely accepts the USA PATRIOT Act as a part of civic life as immutable, perhaps even more so than the Bill of Rights. However, this act – passed in the dead of night, with little to no oversight, in a panic after the biggest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor – is not only novel, it is also fundamentally opposed to virtually every principle on which the United States of America was founded. It might not be going anywhere anytime soon, but patriots, liberty lovers and defenders of Constitutional government should nonetheless familiarize themselves with the onerous provisions of this law, which is nothing short of a full-throttle attack on the American republic.

What’s Even in the USA PATRIOT Act?

What is in the USA PATRIOT Act? In the Michael Moore film Fahrenheit 9/11, then Rep. John Conyers cracked wise about how no one had actually read the Act and how this was in fact par for the course with America's laws. Thus, before delving into the deeper issues surrounding the PATRIOT Act, it is worth discussing what the Act actually says. Here’s a brief look at the 10 Titles in the PATRIOT Act:
Most of the provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act were set to sunset four years after the bill was passed into law. However, the law was extended first by President George W. Bush and then by President Barack H. Obama. The latter is particularly scandalous given that, at least in part, a rejection of the surveillance culture that permeated the Bush Administration was responsible for the election of Obama in 2008.

Passing the USA PATRIOT Act

Next, it’s important to remember the environment in which the USA PATRIOT Act was passed: Post-9/11. It is not the slightest bit of exaggeration to label the environment in which the PATRIOT Act was passed as “hysterical,” nor is “compliant” a misnomer for the Congress of the time. Opposition to the Act was slim and intensive review of one of the most sweeping Acts of Congress in American history was nonexistent.
All told, Congress took a whopping six weeks drafting, revising, reviewing and passing the PATRIOT Act. That’s less time than Congress typically spends on totally uncontroversial and routine bills that don’t gut the Fourth Amendment. The final vote found only 66 opponents in the House and one (Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold) in the Senate. The entire passage of the PATRIOT Act, from start to finish, took place behind closed doors. There were no committee reports or hearings for opponents to testify, nor did anyone bother to read the bill.
“Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism” is the bloated and overwrought full name of the bill, crafted by a 23-year-old Congressional staffer named Chris Cylke. This ridiculous name puts the focus not on the surveillance aspects or the erosion of basic civil liberties enshrined in Western society since the Magna Carta, but on patriotism. At the time of its creation, the messaging was very clear: Real patriots support massive intrusions on civil rights. As President George W. Bush said at the time, “Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.” This sentiment very much seemed to apply to American citizens.
While the argument that if you have nothing to hide you shouldn’t fear investigation is anathema in a Constitutional republic with regard to citizens, it should be standard operating procedure when it comes to our organs of government. If we cannot expect transparency from the United States Congress – elected officials charged with representing the will of the people and protecting the Constitution – then we certainly can’t expect it anywhere else.

The Unfortunate Growth of the USA PATRIOT Act

It’s no surprise to those in the liberty movement that given an inch, the government (in particular the military-intelligence community) took a mile. Even the nebulous definition of “terrorism,” largely centered around a long litany of acts rather than the motivation behind them, has expanded to include receiving military training from a proscribed organization (without actually committing any terrorist acts or even acts of violence of any stripe) as well as “narcoterrorism” – the latter particularly convenient, as the United States government continues its losing “War on Drugs.”
Indeed, in many ways, the War on (Some) Drugs was the template for the War on Terror. Both wars have no defined enemy, no defined terms of victory. Instead, they are waged against a nebulous concept, while enjoying bipartisan support for their ever-expanding budgets. What’s more, it didn’t take long for the Feds to start using the USA PATRIOT Act for things it was never intended for, including prosecuting the War on Drugs.
Perhaps the silliest application of the USA PATRIOT Act is the prosecution of Adam McGaughey. McGaughey maintained a fansite for the television series Stargate SG-1. The Feds charged him with copyright infringement and computer fraud. In the course of their investigation, the FBI leveraged the PATRIOT Act to get financial records from his website’s ISP. This was made possible by the USA PATRIOT Act amending the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, allowing for search and seizure of ISP records.
The New York Times discovered in September 2003, that the USA PATRIOT Act was being used to investigate alleged drug traffickers without what would otherwise be sufficient probable cause. These were investigations into non-terrorist acts using a law ostensibly designed to investigate terrorism. There was some suspicion that the Act was being used to investigate crimes occurring before the Act was passed, violating the ex post facto clause of the United States Constitution.
In one of the biggest power grabs (excluding virtually everything we know from Edward Snowden – more on that below), the FBI sent tens of thousands of “national security letters” and procured over one million financial records from targeted businesses in Las Vegas. These businesses were primarily casinos, car rental bureaus and storage spaces. The data obtained included financial records, credit histories, employment records and even people’s personal health records.
The FBI maintains and databases this – and, indeed, all information collected through the USA PATRIOT Act – indefinitely. In the good old days before the PATRIOT Act, the Feds were compelled to destroy any evidence they collected on someone later found not guilty of a crime. Note that the aforementioned data collection brought to public attention by Edward Snowden (which, again – we’re getting to that) falls under this provision. Not only is the government collecting obscene amounts of private and personal information about you, they’re also storing it indefinitely with no plans to stop.
What’s more, the FBI has approached public libraries to turn over the records for specific terminals, collecting information not about specific users who might be under investigation, but about anyone who has ever used the computer at the public library. Libraries, to their credit, have been very much at the forefront of resistance against the PATRIOT Act, with some litigating compliance despite operating on small budgets and others posting “canary letters,” which effectively say “The FBI Hasn’t Been Here Yet.” The removal of such a letter would warn patrons that the FBI has been sniffing around in their records.
Indeed, the greatest criticism of the PATRIOT Act is the simplest and perhaps most obvious: Why does an Act ostensibly passed to fight terrorism so drastically expand the government’s power to investigate virtually everyone else? The PATRIOT Act is not merely unconstitutional, it is an unprecedented expansion of state power in the Anglosphere, a culture based on restricted government and the primacy of individual rights.
An excellent example of this is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) expansion. Most people are familiar with the term “FISA court,” but very few people actually know what it is – a special federal court created under the Carter Administration that grants approval of electronic surveillance of both citizens and resident aliens in the event that they are accused of acting in the service of a foreign power. The last part of this sentence is very important: The FISA courts are not simply for allowing surveillance of anyone that it might be expedient to collect information about. The scope of their powers is very, very limited.
Or was.
The PATRIOT Act lowered the burden of evidence required to obtain a FISA warrant for electronic surveillance and expanded the overall scope of the FISA courts. Any savvy federal agent can now drape his charges in the garb of (what else?) “national security” and obtain electronic surveillance privileges hitherto only dreamed of by investigators. FISA courts have become pliant tools in the hands of the Feds, gladly approving their requests to monitor phone and internet surveillance, as well as access to medical, financial and educational records.

The Future of the USA PATRIOT Act

Do we still need the PATRIOT Act? Did we ever? All laws are certainly a product of their times. But this seems much more acutely true of the USA PATRIOT Act, which was passed in a rush and under duress without due consideration.
Particularly in light of the revelations from Edward Snowden – that the government is spying on everything they possibly can – it’s worth asking if there’s any walking back. He points out that the police state apparatus was originally for drug dealers, then for terrorists, but ultimately ended up being applied to anyone and everyone.
What’s more, Bob Bullard notes another frightful aspect of the USA PATRIOT Act: Terrorism-related cases are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. This means that there is little or no oversight. There is no surer hallmark of a police state than an all-powerful domestic surveillance agency with no transparency or oversight. While the USA PATRIOT Act might not create an American Stasi as such, it certainly paves the way for one.

2020.10.26 10:01 PelotonBot Milestone Monday: Weekly Discussion Thread

A weekly discussion thread celebrating milestones and achievements by PelotonCycle members. We talk a lot about putting in the work, training hard, working out together. Let's not forget to celebrate those hard-won achievements. Because PelotonCycle doesn't try to make you strong, beautiful, or capable. We're here to remind you that you already are.
Congratulations to all; we're proud of you!
